For many, the Bose QuietComfort® 35 wireless headphones well may be the Nirvana of headphones. Mainstream audio fans consider Bose produces the best noise cancelling technology in the business and now this new top model comes with wireless Bluetooth. No wires. Extremely quiet. Heaven.
I was surprised when first listening. The brilliant noise cancellation is still there, and the best in the business -- at least slightly better than my reference Sennheiser Momentum Wireless Headphones [read our review here]. But it was the very refined, dynamic sound that came out of the very comfortable earcups that was surprising.
The previous iteration of the 35s, the wired 25s had the typical Bose sound -- refinement, but lacking in dynamics -- lots of rich midrange with attenuated highs and lows. Good for the plane or the commute, but not for serious listening.
The 35s are dynamic and offer the listener a different type of Bose experience. I began with Dudamel's DGG Beethoven 5th Symphony. It shuddered and shook from the start. More surprises The string basses in the scherzo had heft and bite and the brass in the finale rang with the most life like timbre. And when Beethoven requires pianissimos (strings in the slow movement), all that remained was the string section, balanced and voiced perfectly by Dudamel.
Vocals also sounded better than I remember on Bose products. 'No One Ever Tells You' by Seth MacFarlane sounded wonderful. McFarlane's rich baritone was very musical. Chest tones gave no problems with playback, and punches in his band, either lead trumpet or drums, also demonstrated just how dynamic the playback could be.
In no way the 35s supplant wireless headphones from Master & Dynamic or wired headphones from Audeze, but for those needing excellent sound with superb noise cancellation, you can buy with confidence.
Like all Bose products, the fit and finish is superior. The Bose website suggests:
- Industry-leading noise cancellation makes quiet sound quieter and music sound better
- Wireless connectivity to your devices through Bluetooth ® and NFC pairing
- Up to 20 hours of wireless listening per charge, and 40 hours when wired
- Premium materials make them lightweight and comfortable for all-day listening
- Bose® Connect app helps manage paired devices and gives you a personalized experience
Pairing was simple. But Bluetooth connectivity is not aptX, the gold standard these days. Functionality is top notch via the Connect app and easy to use controls. Simply, a winner.
