This is the debut release by young Toronto, contemporary country artist Mike Butler. The eponymous CD is filled to the brim with upbeat country music penned by Butler and Nashville songwriters.
Butler’s voice is strong and flexible. He sings bang in tune and exudes confidence — all the songs leave you feeling good.
Like all good musicians, Butler surrounds himself with excellence: Juno-nominated producer/keyboardist Doug Romanow (Michael Pickett, Chantal Kreviazuk), Mark Ineo (The Tenors), John Dymond (Blackie and The Rodeo Kings), Kevin Fox (Sarah McLachlan), Justin Ostrander (Amy Grant, Terri Clark), and Dan Dugmore (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt). The band is tight and rocks.
Butler describes his music as ‘full of heart, soul, high energy, and an upbeat sense of humour’. From the anthem ‘There Goes The Weekend’, which has country hit written all over it, to the cool banjo riffs in ‘My First Time’, to the pure fun of ‘Seven Beers Deep’, Butler hits all the right notes, chords and feelings. The recording is studio based, but the tracks are integrated well. The sound is so immediate, it literally jumps out of the speakers.
Pop the CD in your Ford 150 or throw it on to get a party started and Butler’s new disc will not let you down. His songs are authentic and he tells a good tale. An auspicious debut. Buy with confidence.
