Scab labour and classical artists are terms that are not usually combined in the same sentence. That said, the sad situation in Detroit is exactly what it is, but with a Strad and a pretty dress.
The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is in a legal strike (offered a 22% pay cut, but facing a 33% cut and imposed free services making an almost 50% cut). The management has offered a recital by Sarah Chang in place of the opening concert. Will Chang cross the picket line?
Chang has suggested via Twitter that she would donate her fee to the Detroit Symphony Pension Fund. Sadly, according to the musicians’ Facebook page, there is no such fund!
The open letter from the orchestra to Chang is here.

She canceled.
And the letter from the DSO musicians to Sarah Chang after the cancellation.
She did the right thing by standing with her comrades and not performing.I praise her for this act.
Comrades, indeed.
