Alessandro Bianchini—My Space 24: Birdbox Records/All-Analog, Limited Edition Vinyl [2025]

Birdbox Records, a boutique label based in Italy, has been quietly building a reputation among in-the-know audiophiles for their meticulous, all-analog recordings of the vibrant Italian jazz scene. Spearheaded by founder and recording engineer Lorenzo Vella, the label combines vintage analog equipment with modern sensibilities, offering a sonic experience that recalls the golden era of jazz recording in the 1950s and ’60s.

While Birdbox has largely flown under the radar in the U.S., that may be about to change. My Space 24, the latest release from vibraphonist and composer Alessandro Bianchini, is not only the label’s finest sonic achievement to date—it’s a musically rich and emotionally rewarding listen that deserves serious attention from audiophiles and jazz lovers alike.

Bianchini, who trained at the Bonporti Conservatory in Trento, brings a unique dual fluency in classical and jazz traditions. A former classical percussionist who studied violin before mastering vibraphone and marimba, he bridges genres effortlessly. That versatility—and deep musicality—shine throughout this, his second Birdbox release following 2022’s 10/5.

From the opening notes of Side A, the record reveals itself as a thoughtful, melodic, and highly refined work. The three original compositions—“Cape Town,” “Tu Dihi,” and “My Voice”—favor subtlety and atmosphere over flash, yet the writing is harmonically rich and emotionally resonant. Bianchini has said he wanted to craft songs that are “more understandable and easier to listen to,” and these pieces reflect that intention without sacrificing depth. The ensemble—Lorenzo Simoni on alto saxophone, Marco Micheli on double bass, and Nelide Bandello on drums—is tight and intuitive, with each player given space to contribute distinct textures and colors.

Side B continues with two more studio tracks before closing with two live performances. Bianchini’s arrangement of Sam Rivers’ “Cyclic Episode” is both respectful and inventive, while his solo rendition of a Bach lute suite on vibraphone is nothing short of mesmerizing—a graceful nod to his classical foundation. The two live tracks, including the Miles Davis-associated “Summer Nights” by Harry Warren and the closing original “Come Saprei,” cap the record with energy and finesse.

Sonically, My Space 24 is a triumph. Engineered by Andrea Scardovi and mastered by Vella himself at Nightingale Studios, the recording offers an enveloping analog presentation that is both intimate and expansive. Bianchini’s vibraphone is placed with care in the soundstage—crystalline, resonant, and holographically present. Simoni’s alto sax floats with breath and bloom, Micheli’s bass is weighty yet articulate, and Bandello’s drum work, particularly his brush and cymbal textures, adds shimmer and dimension. The spatial imaging is exceptional, with each instrument surrounded by lifelike air and captured with astonishing realism.

The production chain was entirely analog, from the two-inch multitrack master to a final ½-inch mixdown on an Ampex ATR-102. Vella’s dedication to analog authenticity is evident in every groove of this LP. The result is a rare convergence of audiophile-grade sound and inspired musical content—a record that invites repeat listening and deep appreciation.

The vinyl pressing quality is excellent—dead quiet, flat, and free from surface noise. The presentation is equally impressive: housed in a striking gatefold jacket featuring bold cover art, the LP also includes an eight-page booklet with artist bios, photos, full credits, and detailed notes on the recording process and equipment used. It’s a thoughtfully packaged release that reflects the care and pride Birdbox puts into every detail.

My Space 24 is that rare album where sound and substance exist in perfect harmony. Bianchini’s compositional voice is distinctive, lyrical, and quietly adventurous, and Birdbox Records has given it the sonic canvas it deserves. This is not just an audiophile showpiece—it’s a moving, memorable work of art.
