Air Tight PC-1 Supreme Mono MC Phono Cartridge
The Air Tight PC -1 Supreme Mono MC Phono Cartridge is the mono version of the stereo cartridge I reviewed last year. Like the stereo cartridge, it’s expensive, retailing for USD12,975.
As such, “The Air Tight PC-1 Supreme Mono is a high-end, hand-built moving coil (MC) phono cartridge designed specifically for playing mono vinyl records with exceptional clarity, dynamic range, and deep bass. It is a specialized mono version derived from the acclaimed PC-1 Supreme series.

Visually, the cartridge bodies look identical—little golden nuggets. Like everything the famous Japanese manufacturer makes, fit and finish are spectacular.
Air Tight’s packaging of both carts is the same. A little Japanese overkill, but appreciated. A spec sheet is given plus appropriate tools and screws.
Installation is a breeze with top-down screws. None of the minute washers and bolts and upside-down installation (looking at you Phasemation!).
The new mono Supreme was treated with matched, high-quality ancillaries. It was installed on my Pure Fidelity Harmony Turntable and Origin Live Enterprise Mk 4 Tonearm (USD 18,000, incl. tonearm). It was amplified by the Phasemation EA-350 Phono Amplifier (USD 6400) and IKEDA’s IST-201 Step-Up Transformer (USD 5400). The cabling was Ansuz Acoustics C2 Signalz Interconnect Tonearm (€6400.000/2 metres).

Features
At the heart of the cartridge is Air Tight’s SH-μX core, a high-permeability core material developed to deliver high efficiency while maintaining an optimal balance between low impedance and high output voltage. The result is a design intended to extract a strong, clean signal from the groove without compromising the character of the mono recording.
The cartridge has also been specifically engineered for true mono reproduction. Its stylus and generator system are designed to track the single-groove geometry of mono records accurately, while reducing the surface noise and phase-related problems that can arise when older mono pressings are played with conventional stereo cartridges. This specialized approach allows the cartridge to reveal the full character of vintage mono recordings with greater focus and authenticity.
As with Air Tight’s other products, construction is a meticulous, handmade affair. Each cartridge is assembled in Japan by Air Tight (Aura Note/A.M.M.) to exacting tolerances, reflecting the company’s emphasis on precision craftsmanship and careful quality control.
Sound
The Air Tight PC-1 Supreme Mono MC Phono Cartridge is a superbly refined transducer that combines the tonal richness and natural musicality associated with the finest Japanese moving-coil designs with exceptional speed, resolution, and dynamic authority. Much like its stereo counterpart, its presentation is notably coherent and complete, revealing the character of a recording without imposing an obvious sonic signature of its own. Ella’s Rodgers and Hart Songbook was alive, fresh and vibrant, super lush, too. The cartridge’s ultra-low 1-ohm internal impedance, 0.4mV output, boron cantilever, and carefully engineered magnetic system provide the foundation for a sound that is both detailed and coherent. Even the Vienna Philharmonic at full volume on complex Strauss couldn’t unnerve it.
Dynamics are among the PC-1 Supreme Mono’s greatest strengths. Large-scale orchestral crescendos emerge with tremendous force and scale, yet the cartridge remains controlled and unflustered when the music becomes complex. Powerful percussion has convincing weight and impact, with the initial strike, subsequent bloom, and natural decay reproduced as distinct parts of the musical event. Equally impressive are the cartridge’s microdynamic abilities: subtle changes in instrumental pressure, vocal inflection (stunning Elizabeth Schwarzkopf's original Columbia mono recitals), and phrasing are rendered with great sensitivity. The result is a vivid and lifelike performance that conveys both the physical power and the emotional expression of the music.
The soundstage is expansive and exceptionally stable, even though the presentation remains firmly centred, as a properly reproduced mono recording should. Rather than creating an artificial impression of stereo width, the PC-1 Supreme Mono produces a large, dimensional image with impressive depth, height, and spatial solidity. Instruments and voices occupy clearly defined positions within the recorded acoustic, while the ambience surrounding them is reproduced with remarkable transparency. Dense orchestral passages, such as Furtwängler’s famous Columbia Vienna Eroica, remain open and intelligible, allowing individual instrumental lines to emerge naturally from the overall musical texture.
Bass performance is authoritative, deep, and exceptionally well controlled. The PC-1 Supreme Mono does not exaggerate low frequencies or add artificial warmth; instead, it reproduces the weight, texture, and fundamental power contained in the groove. Double basses possess realistic body and resonance, timpani have satisfying impact, and large bass drums convey both physical scale and the distinctive character of the instrument. Importantly, the bass remains agile and articulate, preserving pitch definition and rhythmic momentum even during demanding musical passages. This combination of extension, control, and tonal accuracy gives the cartridge an impressive sense of foundation without sacrificing speed or transparency.
The midrange is richly coloured in the most natural sense, offering beautiful tonal density without sounding overly warm or romantically embellished. Voices possess convincing presence and texture, while strings, brass, and woodwinds are reproduced with a striking degree of timbral authenticity. Treble performance is extended, delicate, and highly resolved, revealing fine harmonic detail without becoming aggressive or etched.
Conclusion
Above all, the PC-1 Supreme Mono succeeds because its many technical strengths are integrated into a unified musical presentation. It combines powerful dynamics, an expansive and stable soundstage, deep and controlled bass, natural tonal colour, and exceptional resolution in a manner that makes mono recordings sound immediate, immersive, and profoundly lifelike.
